Creatures in Asia -- Tomoya Akihama

Medicinal herbs in Mustang

TOMOYA AKIHAMA (Agri-Bio. Genetic Resources Institute)

Genetic resources refer to the genes or individuals with the genes that mankind can utilize, now or potentially, to sustain our food supply or to use creatures more effectively through selective breeding.

Unfortunately, we are losing genetic resources as nature is being destroyed. Thus, the conservation of genetic resources has been promoted with international cooperation. Conservation of genetic resources involves a set of procedures, namely, the search, introduction, preservation, investigation and utilization of genes.

With a special focus on plants and insects, I will introduce to you the genetic diversity of the world's creatures, in addition to vegetables, fruits and medicinal herbs that minority groups in unexplored territories have used since ancient times.

This time, I'd like to tell you about medicinal herbs in Mustang, Nepal, particularly Iris setosa--the iris researched by Emperor Hirohito, the emperor of the Showa period (1925-1989)--and about edible insects in northeastern Thailand.
